Seeing life through professional eyes

Students attend a photojournalism workshop and learn useful tips from a Formula One photographer.

On the October 28, 2009, Abu Dhabi Men’s College welcomed a special guest: the famous photographer Daniel Reinhard, who came to Abu Dhabi to cover the Formula 1 event on Yas Island. As soon as I heard about his workshop held at our College, I immediately signed up for it.

I have to confess that on the day of the workshop I came late, and without a camera... I was really lucky, however, as one of my colleagues had to go, and he left his camera with me. That was my chance to learn, and throughout the workshop I took lots of pictures with this professional camera - a few good ones and a lot of bad ones!

During the workshop I learned lots of techniques (some of which I have now unfortunately forgotten) and being taught by a professional was absolutely priceless. I watched all the pictures Mr Reinhard took, from race cars, to landscapes - they looked like a timeline for photographs. Mr Reinhard taught us when is the best time to take the photo, how to take it and where. I've learned that all these are the questions you have to ask yourself before going to the site.

The workshop lasted for about three hours, and the best moment was when I got the opportunity to try the instructor's giant camera lens, used to take pictures from far away.
