Zaha Hadid Pavilion welcomes the inspirational Jordanian vocalist Macadi Nahhas, as part of the Levant Music Heritage Project. | |

The most attractive
features of Zaha Hadid Pavilion are its circular architectural design and the
fluid combination of white and black mixed together in harmony. This mobile
music chamber, which has already featured at partner events such as the
Manchester International Festival and the Holland Festival, plays a central
role in this year’s Abu Dhabi Festival. On Friday March 25, the Pavilion hosted
a concert by the inspirational Jordanian vocalist Macadi Nahhas, as part of the
Levant Music Heritage Project. Renowned for her exceptional style in reviving
traditional Middle East folk songs, Macadi performed songs associated with
Fayrouz and the Levant more generally. Her deep interest in the traditional
music of the Levant is part of her pioneering long-term research project into
the folkloric music of Bilad Al Sham.
During this spectacular
evening, the Arabic hymns were not just sang by Macadi, but also by the public, and one of the members of the audience who
joined in was Her Excellency Mrs Hoda I Al Khamis Kanoo, Founder and Artistic
Director of the Abu Dhabi Festival. And when Macadi started the well-known ‘Fi
Yaoum W Laila’ almost everybody sang along in harmony with the beautiful music.
Before the last song,
Macadi thanked Mrs. Kanoo and The Abu Dhabi Festival for their initiative to
bring traditional songs into the modern society. At the end of the evening,
Macadi performed once more the traditional wedding song ‘Sabbal Oyounu’, at the
request of the audience.
